Relational Life Therapy for LGBTQIA+ Couples and Families

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) was created by renowned therapist and bestselling author Terry Real. Offered exclusively by Kaya Colin at our practice, RLT is designed to quickly and effectively address relationship issues by removing barriers to connection, redistributing power dynamics, and building practical skills that lead to lasting change.

Rooted in feminist principles, RLT emphasizes equality and mutual respect. Kaya takes a directive and practical approach, equipping you with concrete tools you can apply immediately in your relationship, whether you are a couple, polycule, or family.

Kaya shows up as a fellow traveler on your journey, offering honest and respectful feedback grounded in real expertise. Ultimately you are the one who creates the change. Her goal is simply to support you in getting there.

FAQS

Common questions about Relational Life Therapy

  • RLT is more direct and action-oriented than traditional couples therapy. Rather than spending sessions exploring the history of your relationship, RLT focuses on identifying harmful patterns and changing them quickly through practical skills and honest feedback.

  • RLT is effective for any couple, polycule, or family experiencing conflict, communication breakdowns, emotional disconnection, or relationship transitions. It is particularly well suited for LGBTQIA+ relationships, ENM partnerships, and non-traditional family structures.

  • Sessions are structured and interactive. Kaya will actively engage with everyone present, identify patterns causing distress, and guide you toward healthier ways of connecting. Practical exercises and real-time feedback are a core part of every session.

  • Couples therapy is not covered by insurance, including Medicaid. This is because insurance companies require an individual mental health diagnosis to reimburse therapy services. Couples therapy focuses on the relationship itself rather than an individual diagnosis, which falls outside what most insurance plans will cover. Sessions are offered at a self-pay rate.
